Special Education Tax Deduction
Did you know that Roosevelt Academy tuition may be tax-deductible as a medical expense? Families with children enrolled in specialized education programs may qualify for deductions under IRS Publication 502, which covers medical expenses, including special education costs.
Important: We encourage families to consult with a tax professional to determine their eligibility for this deduction.
IRS Guidelines for Special Education Deductions
According to IRS Publication 502, under "Special Education":
Qualified Expenses May Include: Tuition, meals, and lodging at a school that provides
special education services designed to help a child overcome learning disabilities.
Medical Recommendation Required: A doctor must recommend that the child attend the school due to their learning disabilities.
Primary Purpose Must Be Special Education: The main reason for attending must be to receive specialized instruction, with any standard education being secondary.
Under the "Transportation" section of IRS Publication 502:
Transportation Costs May Be Deductible – If transportation is necessary for medical care, expenses such as gas, parking fees, and tolls may be included.
Out-of-Pocket Costs Can Be Claimed – Families can track and deduct actual travel expenses or use the IRS standard mileage rate for medical travel.

Using 529 Savings Plans for Private School Tuition
529 savings plan
Families may also use 529 savings plans to pay for tuition at Roosevelt Academy. Under current federal guidelines, up to $10,000 per student per year can be used for K-12 private school tuition without federal tax penalties.
Important: Any payments made to Roosevelt Academy using 529 funds must be arranged in advance with our Accounts Manager to ensure proper processing.
