What to Expect at Roosevelt Academy

Everything a family needs to know before the first day.

Roosevelt's Five Pillars

    Pillar 1: Regulation First

A child who feels safe does their best thinking. A child who is overwhelmed cannot learn, no matter how good the instruction is. At Roosevelt, every day begins with settling in, not with demands. We build safety into the rhythm of the day so learning happens from a place of calm, not anxiety. This is not a strategy we add on. It is the foundation everything else is built on.

    Pillar 2: Designed, Not Adapted

Most schools for neurodiverse learners start with a traditional classroom and add accommodations on top. Roosevelt was designed from the ground up for the way neurodiverse children actually learn. The daily structure, the sensory environment, the way instruction is delivered, the way support is provided, none of it was borrowed from a model built for someone else. This school was built for your child. Not adjusted for them. Built.

    Pillar 3: Strength Before Struggle

We see your child's gifts before we see their challenges. Every neurodiverse child arrives with abilities that most schools never discover because they stopped looking after the diagnosis. At Roosevelt, we find what your child does well and we build on it. We do not ignore what is hard. We address it through the lens of what is strong. A child who knows their own strengths has the confidence to face their challenges. That is the order that works.

Pillar 4: Independence as the Outcome

The goal of a Roosevelt education is not a grade. It is a capable, confident, independent human being. Every lesson, every outing, every conversation, every skill we teach is measured against one question: does this move my child closer to a life they can lead on their own? Community learning, entrepreneurship, self-advocacy, public speaking, life skills, concurrent college enrollment, these are not extras in our program. They are the program. We are preparing your child for a life, not a transcript.

Pillar 5: The Whole Family, Not Just the Student

Your child does not learn in isolation. They learn inside a family that is fighting for them, worrying about them, and hoping for them. Roosevelt partners with families, not just students. You will hear from us. You will know how your child's day went. You will be told the truth, the wins and the hard moments. You will never feel like you are on the outside of your own child's education. When the school and the family work together, the child thrives.

Your Child's Day

Every day at Roosevelt begins with a moment to arrive. Before we ask your child to learn, we ask how they are feeling. A child who is settled and safe does their best thinking. A child who is overwhelmed cannot. This is not a luxury. It is the foundation everything else is built on.

From there, your child moves through focused learning blocks with clear structure, built-in movement breaks, and intentional transitions. The pace adjusts to your child, not the other way around. Afternoons include life skills, leadership development, and enrichment. The day ends with reflection, a chance for your child to recognize their own growth.

Your Child's Navigator

At Roosevelt, the adult with your child all day is called a Navigator. Not a teacher. Not an aide. A Navigator. They are selected for their temperament, their creativity, and their ability to connect with neurodiverse learners. They are trained through our own internal system specifically for this work. Your child's Navigator knows how they learn, what helps them regulate, and what to do when things get hard.

How We Handle Hard Days

Bad days happen. We expect them and we are prepared. Our staff are trained in de-escalation and co-regulation. We do not panic. We do not punish. We do not call you to pick up your child at the first sign of struggle. We work through it with your child, and then we tell you about it honestly. Our goal is not a perfect day. Our goal is a child who knows that the adults around them can handle the hard moments without giving up.

How We Communicate With You

You will hear from us. Not just when something goes wrong. We share the full picture, the wins, the growth, the hard moments, and what we did about them. You will never feel like you are dropping your child into a black box. You are our partner. Partners share information

Clinical Support

Roosevelt partners with experienced clinical professionals to bring therapy into the school day. Available services through our partnerships include Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA), speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and pediatric wellness consultation through Glow Pediatrics. These services are coordinated with your child's Navigator so support happens naturally, not through pull-outs or disruptions.

Community Learning

Every week, our students learn in the real world. Structured community outings to libraries, grocery stores, restaurants, and community destinations build executive function, social confidence, decision-making, and independence in the environments where these skills actually matter. Our Roosevelt Academy van makes sure every student can participate.

Beyond Academics

Roosevelt develops the whole child. Academics are rigorous and Cognia-accredited. But we also build executive function, self-advocacy, public speaking, entrepreneurship, and life skills. In high school, students access concurrent college enrollment, earning real college credit while still at Roosevelt. We are preparing your child for a capable, independent, fulfilling life, not just the next grade.

Sensory Supports Welcome

If your child uses a weighted blanket, noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, chew tools, or any other sensory support, they are welcome to bring them. These are not disruptions. They are part of how your child learns best. We build sensory awareness into everything we do.

Food and Lunch

Students bring their own lunch. We understand that many neurodiverse children have food sensitivities, allergies, or restricted diets. Your child can eat their safe foods without judgment.

Raising Leaders. Not Labels. That is the Roosevelt promise.
